Tips for healthy gums

When we think of oral health, our teeth are usually the first things that come to mind. However, we often neglect our gums—even though they play a major role in keeping your mouth healthy.

In addition to brushing regularly and effectively, here are a few extra tips to help maintain happy gums:

  • Rinse, rinse, and then rinse some more
Brushing helps remove a lot of harmful bacteria, but some bacteria remain on your tongue and other surfaces in your mouth. Rinsing with mouthwash can help eliminate additional bacteria that may be trapped in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Flossing
Flossing can be frustrating (and even uncomfortable for some), but it’s essential for cleaning between your teeth and along the gumline. It helps remove bacteria buildup, food particles, plaque, and tartar. Bonus: flossing can also reduce bad breath by removing what’s stuck around the gums.
  • Regular dental cleanings
This one is a given. Professional cleanings support overall oral health and help prevent issues by removing buildup that gets wedged in your teeth despite your best efforts.
  • Dairy is your friend
Dairy products aren’t just great for calcium—they can also support your teeth and gums. Milk and cheese help neutralize acids in the mouth, protecting enamel and strengthening teeth. They can also help reduce plaque and rinse away food particles, which benefits the gums too.
  • Avoid soft drinks
Processed sugar and carbonated beverages can increase plaque production, which may eventually lead to gingivitis. The acidity in soft drinks can also weaken your tooth enamel over time.

Gums are just as important as teeth, yet they’re often overlooked. A few small habits—done consistently—can help you avoid unwanted problems and gum disease in the future.
