In this 4 min read, Dr. Margossian from Clinique Dentaire du Boulevard explains:
Are your pearly whites looking not-so-pearly-white these days? Not to worry: it’s entirely normal for teeth to become slightly discoloured over time. Lifestyle factors like food, drinks, tobacco, and even medication can all have an impact on the aesthetics of your smile. Chalk it up to standard wear and tear.
While age can play a factor in tooth discolouration (given prolonged exposure to foods like pasta sauce and drinks like red wine), whitening can make a world of difference for patients young and old. Shiny, happy teeth know no age – if you want to boost your confidence and remove surface stains using a tooth whitening treatment, you’ve come to the right place.
Do I really need to see a dentist for teeth whitening?
It’s very common for aestheticians and beauty salons to offer teeth whitening services, but buyer beware: when you trust anyone except a licensed professional to administer a whitening treatment, you might not like what you find.
There’s a lot going on inside your mouth, and no room for error. You only get one set of teeth, after all! Dentists are experts in dental anatomy, and are well aware of the potential risks that accompany tooth bleaching (and how to avoid them). A beauty technician might do a great job on your hair extensions or manicure, but they are not likely to have the requisite training to handle your teeth with care.
If you want safe, long-lasting results, it’s not worth the gamble. Go for safety over price – you’ll thank yourself later.
Does whitening work on all types of teeth?
Teeth that have lost their shine due to food, wine, or tobacco generally respond very well to whitening treatments. However, if you’re experiencing discolouration due to medication (antihistamines, blood pressure medication, etc.) or a tooth injury, the answer may not be as straightforward.
Caps, veneers, fillings, or crowns may also be unresponsive to whitening treatments, depending on the material. If you’re not sure whether you are a good candidate, you can call our office anytime and one of our friendly staff members will talk you through your options!
What does the teeth whitening process look like?
Achieving a whiter, brighter smile is a quick and essentially painless process. When you arrive for your appointment, we’ll get you nice and comfortable in the dentist’s chair, then start by choosing an enamel swatch that matches your dream tooth colour.
Once you’ve selected your desired shade of white, we will isolate the gum: this is one of the most important steps in the process, aiming to protect them from accidental injury for the duration of the treatment. If not done properly, they may be exposed to whitening gels that are perfectly safe for teeth, but too harsh for your delicate gums.
Next, the dentist will apply a whitening agent to your teeth. Depending on your chosen shade of white and the concentration of the treatment, our specialists will know exactly how long to wait before taking it off – we want to avoid the unnatural white “glow” often associated with DIY at-home kits.
After the bleach is removed, you’ll be free to go and share your radiant smile with the world.
Can I whiten my teeth at home?
You certainly can! At-home teeth whitening costs the same as in-office whitening. This option is perfect for patients who are pressed for time or who can’t make it to our office on a more regular basis (even though we would love to see you).
To set yourself up for achieving whiter teeth at home, you will need to make one appointment with us. During this time, we will take impressions of your teeth to create a tray modelled after your mouth. That’s where the whitening agent will go.
One of our hygienists will also teach you how to safely use your kit on your own. We generally recommend wearing the tray for one to two hours per day for a couple of weeks, until the desired shade of white is achieved.

Nothing short of a Maestra!
My family have all been patients of Dr. Margossian since we moved to Montreal in 2011. The whole team is wonderful, my five year old regularly asks when he gets to go to the dentist again. I have recommended Dr. Margossian to friends and colleagues, and will continue!
